Caring for bleeding gums: salt-water rinse, gum massage and amla

Gums that bleed when you brush are asking for attention, not harder brushing. A warm salt-water rinse, a gentle gum massage and vitamin C-rich foods like amla and guava support healthier gums — alongside a visit to the dentist.

Illustrated still life with turmeric root, amla.

The Ayurvedic view

The most common reason gums bleed is gingivitis: plaque at the gum line irritates the gums, making them red, puffy and tender. Left alone, it can progress to gum disease that loosens teeth. Ayurveda's daily oral routine includes gum massage with oil and chewing astringent herbs; modern dentistry adds careful brushing, flossing and professional cleaning. Both agree that consistency is everything.

Ingredients

  • 1 glass warm water with ½ teaspoon salt
  • A few drops of sesame or coconut oil with a tiny pinch of turmeric for massage
  • 1 fresh amla or guava a day, or other vitamin C-rich fruit

How to prepare

  1. Dissolve the salt in warm water.
  2. Mix the oil and turmeric in a small bowl.

How to use

  • Rinse with salt water for 30 seconds twice a day, after brushing.
  • Once a day, massage the gums gently with a clean fingertip dipped in the oil mixture for a minute, then rinse.
  • Eat amla, guava, oranges or lemon water daily.

Helpful habits

  • Use a soft toothbrush, angle it towards the gum line and brush gently for two minutes.
  • Floss or use interdental brushes daily; bleeding usually reduces within 1–2 weeks of regular cleaning.
  • Stop smoking and tobacco — they hide bleeding while damaging gums.

Precautions

  • Don't swallow the salt water; people on low-salt diets should spit out fully.
  • See a dentist for bleeding that continues beyond two weeks, swollen or receding gums, loose teeth, pus or persistent bad taste.
  • Unusual bleeding from gums along with easy bruising, nosebleeds or fatigue needs a doctor; also tell your doctor if you take blood thinners.
  • Pregnancy can make gums bleed more — have a dental check-up.
