Home remedies for tired, dry and irritated eyes

Long hours on screens, dust, heat, air-conditioning and short sleep leave many of us with eyes that feel dry, gritty, itchy or tired by evening. This hub gathers our home remedies for eyes: soothing compresses, simple rest routines and eye-friendly food habits.

In Ayurveda the eyes are closely tied to pitta, the principle of heat and light, and to alochaka pitta in particular. Traditional eye care therefore leans on cooling and calming measures: splashing the closed eyes with cool clean water, resting cucumber slices or cold cotton pads on the lids, palming with warm hands, gentle blinking and focusing exercises, foot massage with ghee at night, and a diet with amla, carrots, leafy greens and a spoon of ghee. Nothing should ever be put directly inside the eye unless a doctor has prescribed it.

The eyes are delicate, so home care is only for mild, short-lived discomfort. Sudden loss or blurring of vision, eye pain, strong redness, light sensitivity, thick discharge, an injury or a chemical splash needs an eye doctor straight away. Please also keep up regular eye check-ups, especially for children and anyone with diabetes.
