Benefits of coconut water (nariyal pani): natural hydration for summer, fever and recovery
Fresh nariyal pani from a roadside vendor is one of India's best summer drinks. The benefits of coconut water come from its natural electrolytes — especially potassium — plus a little natural sugar, which make it a refreshing way to rehydrate in heat, after light exercise, during mild loose motions and while recovering from fever.

Benefits of coconut water: what's inside a tender coconut
A cup of coconut water has about 45–60 calories and plenty of potassium, with smaller amounts of sodium, magnesium and calcium. It hydrates about as well as water for everyday needs. It has less sodium than oral rehydration solution (ORS), so it is not a replacement for ORS in significant diarrhoea or dehydration.
In Ayurveda, narikela jala is sweet, cooling and light; it calms pitta, quenches thirst and is traditionally given in summer heat, burning urination and after fever.
Ingredients
- 1 fresh tender green coconut
How to prepare
- Drink it fresh, soon after opening; if storing, refrigerate and use within a few hours.
How to use
- In summer, have a glass of coconut water mid-morning or after being outdoors.
- During mild loose motions, sip it between ORS doses and meals.
- During fever recovery, offer small glasses through the day.
- After a light workout, it can replace sugary sports drinks.
Helpful habits
- Choose fresh coconuts over packaged ones, which may have added sugar.
- Eat the soft malai too — it's filling and nutritious.
- One to two glasses a day is enough for most people.
Precautions
- People with kidney disease or on potassium-sparing medicines (some BP and heart medicines) should ask their doctor — extra potassium can be dangerous. Continue prescribed treatment.
- It's safe in pregnancy and for children in normal amounts; for infants, ask your paediatrician.
- People with diabetes should count its natural sugar.
- For severe diarrhoea, vomiting, or signs of dehydration (very little urine, dizziness), use ORS and see a doctor.
Frequently asked questions
Is coconut water good every day?
- One glass a day is fine for most healthy people. Those with kidney disease should check with a doctor.
Is coconut water good for dengue or fever?
- It's a good way to maintain fluids during fever recovery, alongside other fluids and medical care.
Can coconut water replace ORS?
- No. It has too little sodium for significant dehydration; use ORS for diarrhoea and vomiting.
