That constant need to clear your throat, a feeling of something stuck, and phlegm in the morning often come from post-nasal drip. These home remedies for mucus in throat — steam inhalation, a saline nasal rinse, plenty of warm fluids and a pinch of black pepper with honey — help thin and clear the mucus.

Illustrated still life with ajwain seeds, honey, fresh ginger, fenugreek seeds, black pepper.

Home remedies for mucus in throat: where the phlegm comes from

The nose and sinuses make mucus all the time. When there's a cold, allergy, sinus infection, pollution or acid reflux, mucus becomes thicker or more plentiful and drips down the back of the throat (post-nasal drip). It's usually worse in the morning and at night.

Ayurveda sees throat mucus as kapha and uses warming, drying spices — black pepper, ginger, pippali, tulsi — along with steam and avoiding heavy, cold and dairy-rich foods in the evening.

Ingredients

  • A bowl of hot water for steam (a few ajwain seeds optional)
  • Saline: ½ teaspoon non-iodised salt and a pinch of baking soda in 1 cup boiled, cooled water
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper with 1 teaspoon honey
  • Warm water, soups and ginger–tulsi tea

How to prepare

  1. Boil water for steam; for saline, use only water that has been boiled and cooled to lukewarm.

How to use

  • Take steam for 5–10 minutes, morning and night.
  • Rinse each nostril with saline using a neti pot or squeeze bottle once a day, leaning over a sink.
  • Lick the black pepper–honey mix slowly once or twice a day.
  • Sip warm fluids through the day to keep mucus thin.

Helpful habits

  • Avoid curd, ice cream, cold drinks and heavy fried food at night.
  • Raise your head slightly when sleeping.
  • Wear a mask on high-pollution days and treat allergies.

Precautions

  • Never use tap water for nasal rinsing unless boiled — unboiled water can cause rare but serious infections.
  • Children: steam only under supervision, and only older children should use nasal rinses. No honey under 1 year.
  • Pregnant women can use steam and saline; ask before herbal medicines. Black pepper in large amounts may interact with some medicines — ask your doctor if you take regular medication.
  • See a doctor for mucus lasting more than 3 weeks, blood-stained or foul-smelling phlegm, fever, facial pain, trouble swallowing, wheezing or weight loss.
