Home remedies for vomiting: small sips of ORS, ginger, cardamom and resting the stomach

After a bout of vomiting, the most important job is to keep fluids going without upsetting the stomach again. These home remedies for vomiting help: rest the stomach for a short while, then take small sips of ORS or water, try a little ginger or cardamom, and move to bland food like khichdi once it settles.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

Why we vomit

Vomiting is the body's way of emptying the stomach. Common causes include stomach infections, food that didn't agree, overeating, motion sickness, migraine and pregnancy. The main risk is dehydration, especially in children and older adults.

In Indian kitchens, ginger (adrak) and green cardamom (elaichi) are traditional stomach-settlers, and a spoon of ORS or nimbu-pani with a pinch of salt and sugar is a familiar first step.

Ingredients

  • ORS sachet mixed as directed, or 1 litre boiled-cooled water with 6 level teaspoons sugar and half a teaspoon salt
  • A small piece of ginger
  • 2 green cardamom pods

How to prepare

  1. Mix ORS exactly as the packet says.
  2. Simmer a thin slice of ginger and crushed cardamom in a cup of water for 3 minutes; cool to warm.

How to use

  • After vomiting, wait 20–30 minutes, then take 1–2 teaspoons of ORS every few minutes.
  • If it stays down, slowly increase to a few sips at a time.
  • Sip the ginger-cardamom water or chew a cardamom pod if nausea lingers. Start bland food like khichdi, curd rice or banana once vomiting stops for a few hours.

Helpful habits

  • Rest in a cool, airy room and sit up rather than lying flat right after eating.
  • Avoid fried, spicy food, tea, coffee and fizzy drinks for a day.
  • Rinse your mouth after vomiting to protect teeth.

Precautions

  • Seek medical care urgently for blood or green bile in vomit, severe belly pain, high fever, stiff neck, confusion, or head injury before vomiting.
  • See a doctor if you can't keep fluids down for 12 hours, have very little urine, or vomiting lasts more than 1–2 days.
  • Babies, young children, pregnant women, older adults and people with diabetes or kidney disease should get medical advice early.
