Always tired? Rebuilding energy with sleep, breakfast and a dates-and-nuts habit

Feeling drained by mid-afternoon is common, and usually comes down to poor sleep, skipped meals, dehydration, inactivity and stress. A few steady changes — a real breakfast, water, daylight, movement and nourishing snacks — often restore energy within weeks.

Illustrated still life with dates.

The Ayurvedic view

Ayurveda speaks of ojas, the essence of good digestion and rest that gives strength, immunity and a bright mood. Late nights, irregular meals, overwork and worry are said to deplete it, while regular routine (dinacharya), wholesome food and adequate sleep rebuild it. Tiredness that doesn't improve with lifestyle changes, though, deserves tests — anaemia, thyroid problems, diabetes, vitamin B12 and D deficiency and depression are common hidden causes.

Ingredients

  • 2 dates, 4–5 soaked almonds, 1 walnut
  • A warm breakfast: poha with peanuts, vegetable upma, besan chilla, eggs or ragi porridge
  • Water or buttermilk through the day

How to prepare

  1. Soak almonds overnight; peel in the morning.
  2. Prep breakfast ingredients the night before to make mornings easier.

How to use

  • Eat breakfast within an hour or two of waking.
  • Have dates and nuts as a mid-morning or 4 pm snack instead of biscuits.
  • Get 10–15 minutes of daylight and a short walk in the morning.
  • Sleep and wake at consistent times; keep screens away in the last half hour.

Helpful habits

  • A 10-minute walk after lunch beats a third cup of tea for the afternoon slump.
  • Notice your sources of stress and build in short breaks during work.

Precautions

  • People with diabetes should limit dates; people with nut allergies should skip nuts.
  • Don't self-start energy supplements or tonics — some contain heavy metals or steroids.
  • See a doctor if tiredness lasts more than a few weeks, or comes with weight loss, breathlessness, fever, low mood, heavy periods, snoring with daytime sleepiness, or excessive thirst.
