Postpartum weight loss: gentle, breastfeeding-friendly steps after delivery

After delivery, many new mothers feel pressure to 'get back in shape' quickly. Healthy postpartum weight loss is slow and gentle: nourishing home-cooked meals, breastfeeding if possible, rest when the baby sleeps, short walks from the early weeks, and core and pelvic-floor recovery exercises once your doctor clears you.

Postpartum weight loss: what's realistic

Most women lose about 5–6 kg at birth and a few more kilos of fluid in the first weeks. The rest usually comes off gradually over 6–12 months. Breastfeeding uses extra energy, but it also increases hunger, so food quality matters more than cutting calories.

Indian postpartum traditions (and Ayurveda's sutika paricharya) emphasise warm, easily digestible, nourishing foods, oil massage and rest for about 40 days. Heavy ghee-laden laddoos every day can add more weight than needed, so moderation helps.

Ingredients

  • Warm meals: dal, khichdi, vegetables, roti, curd
  • Protein and iron: eggs, paneer, chana, green leafy vegetables
  • Healthy snacks: roasted chana, fruit, a few nuts, one small traditional laddoo
  • Water, milk and soups to stay hydrated

How to prepare

  1. Ask family to help cook simple, balanced meals and keep snacks ready near your feeding spot.

How to use

  • Eat regular meals and don't skip breakfast; include protein each time.
  • Start gentle walks when you feel ready, increasing slowly.
  • After your 6-week check (or as advised), begin pelvic floor (Kegel) exercises and gentle core work, then build up to brisk walking and strength training.
  • Aim for about 0.5 kg loss per week at most while breastfeeding.

Helpful habits

  • Sleep when the baby sleeps — poor sleep increases cravings.
  • Limit sweets and fried snacks brought by visitors.
  • Check for diastasis recti (abdominal separation) before doing crunches.

Precautions

  • Avoid crash diets, fat-burner pills, detox teas and strong herbs while breastfeeding — they can affect milk supply and pass to the baby.
  • After a C-section, wait for your doctor's approval before any exercise beyond walking.
  • Continue prescribed iron, calcium and thyroid medicines; ask your doctor about any new supplement.
  • See a doctor for heavy bleeding, fever, severe tiredness, low mood or thoughts of harming yourself — postpartum depression is common and treatable.
