Ajwain potli: a warm dry compress
A cloth bundle (potli) of warmed carom seeds and salt gives gentle dry heat — a traditional way to comfort a stiff lower back, knees or shoulders on cold days.

Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons ajwain (carom seeds)
- 2 tablespoons coarse salt (optional, holds heat longer)
- A square of thin cotton cloth and a string
How to prepare
- Dry-roast the ajwain and salt in a heavy pan on low heat for 2–3 minutes until warm and fragrant.
- Tip onto the cloth, gather the corners and tie tightly to make a bundle.
How to use
- Test the potli on your forearm first. Press it gently on the stiff area, lifting and moving it every few seconds, for 5–10 minutes.
- Rewarm in the pan as needed. The seeds can be reused a few times.
Precautions
- Always check the heat on your own skin first — potlis can cause burns, especially in people with diabetes or reduced sensation.
- Do not use heat on a fresh injury (first 48 hours), a swollen, red joint, or over broken skin.
- Back pain with numbness, weakness in the legs, or loss of bladder control is an emergency.
