Gentle steam and besan–oats scrub for blackheads
Blackheads on the nose and chin are clogged pores whose tip has darkened in the air. A short herbal steam followed by a soft gram flour and oats scrub once a week keeps them in check — no squeezing required.

The Ayurvedic view
In Ayurvedic terms, blackheads reflect kapha — sticky, heavy oil — settling in the pores. Warmth loosens that oil and a mild, grainy scrub lifts it away. The traditional Indian ubtan of besan is ideal because it cleanses without soap. The golden rule is gentleness: harsh scrubbing and pinching cause redness, broken capillaries and marks.
Ingredients
- A bowl of hot water with a few tulsi or neem leaves (or a pinch of ajwain)
- 1 tablespoon besan and 1 teaspoon finely ground oats
- Curd or rose water to mix
How to prepare
- Pour hot (not boiling) water over the leaves in a wide bowl.
- Mix besan, oats and curd into a soft, slightly grainy paste.
How to use
- Lean over the bowl with a towel over your head, keeping a comfortable distance, for 5 minutes.
- Apply the paste to the nose, chin and forehead and massage in light circles for a minute.
- Leave for 5 minutes more, rinse with lukewarm and then cool water. Once a week is enough.
Helpful habits
- Remove makeup and sunscreen fully every night.
- Use non-comedogenic (non-pore-clogging) products and clean phone screens and pillowcases.
Precautions
- Keep a safe distance from hot water; don't steam children, and skip steam if you have rosacea, broken capillaries or very sensitive skin.
- Don't squeeze blackheads with nails or pins.
- Skip scrubs on active acne, sunburn or eczema.
