Brahmi: the memory herb — tea, oil massage and knowing which plant is which
Brahmi is Ayurveda's most famous medhya (mind-nourishing) herb, used for memory, concentration and calm. It's taken as a mild tea or ghee preparation and used as a cooling head-massage oil. Two different plants go by the name, so it helps to know which you're buying.

The Ayurvedic view
In most of North India, brahmi means Bacopa monnieri, a small succulent creeper of marshy places. In the South and in Bengal, the name is often used for mandukaparni, Centella asiatica (gotu kola), which has rounder leaves. Both are classed as medhya rasayanas in Ayurveda — cooling, calming pitta and vata, and supporting memory and a settled mind. Clinical studies on bacopa suggest modest benefits for memory after several weeks of regular use.
Ingredients
- Brahmi tea: 5–6 fresh brahmi leaves or ¼ teaspoon brahmi powder, 1 cup water, a little honey
- Brahmi oil (coconut- or sesame-based) from a trusted brand, for head massage
How to prepare
- Simmer the leaves or powder in water for 3–4 minutes, strain and cool slightly before adding honey.
- Warm 1–2 teaspoons of brahmi oil by placing the bottle in warm water.
How to use
- Drink a cup of brahmi tea once a day, in the morning, for 6–8 weeks during exam season or demanding periods, then pause.
- Massage warm brahmi oil into the scalp and the soles of the feet in the evening, 2–3 times a week, for a calming effect before sleep.
- Fresh mandukaparni leaves are also eaten as a chutney or salad in some regions.
Helpful habits
- Memory depends on the basics: sleep, regular revision, exercise and limited screen time.
- Brahmi grows easily in a pot kept moist in partial shade.
Precautions
- Bacopa may cause nausea, stomach cramps or loose stools — take it after food.
- Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding; for children, use only on a doctor's advice.
- Check with your doctor if you take thyroid medicines, sedatives, antidepressants or medicines for epilepsy, Alzheimer's or slow heart rate.
- Sudden memory loss, confusion or trouble concentrating that interferes with life needs medical evaluation.
