Warm castor oil pack for stiff, aching knees

Stiff, creaky knees that ache on stairs and after sitting are common after 40. A warm castor oil pack — oil-soaked cloth wrapped around the knee with gentle heat — is a soothing traditional comfort measure, used alongside exercise and weight management.

Illustrated still life with cotton pads, a folded cloth.

The Ayurvedic view

Ayurveda regards castor (eranda) as one of the best oils for vata-type pain and stiffness, and castor oil packs are a folk remedy used in many cultures. Worn-out knee cartilage (osteoarthritis) cannot be rebuilt by any oil, but warmth and massage can ease stiffness so that you can do the strengthening exercises that genuinely help knees.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons castor oil (arandi ka tel)
  • A soft cotton cloth folded to cover the knee
  • Cling film or an old plastic sheet, and a hot-water bag

How to prepare

  1. Warm the castor oil slightly and soak the cloth in it until damp but not dripping.
  2. Fill the hot-water bag with hot water.

How to use

  • Wrap the oiled cloth around the knee, cover with cling film and place the hot-water bag over it (with a towel between if too hot).
  • Rest with the leg supported for 20–30 minutes.
  • Wipe off excess oil. Use 3–4 evenings a week.
  • On other days, do quadriceps strengthening: straight-leg raises and sit-to-stand from a chair, 10 repetitions, twice a day.

Helpful habits

  • Every kilo of body weight lost takes load off the knees.
  • Prefer walking on flat ground, cycling or swimming over long stair climbs and squatting.
  • Wear cushioned footwear.

Precautions

  • Castor oil is for external use here. Don't swallow it without medical advice.
  • Don't use heat on a knee that is red, hot or swollen — that may be inflammation, gout or infection and needs a doctor.
  • People with diabetes or reduced sensation should check heat carefully.
  • See a doctor if the knee locks, gives way, swells suddenly, or pain disturbs sleep.
