Diet for jaundice recovery: light meals, clean fluids and what to avoid

Jaundice means the liver is under strain, and food choices during recovery matter a lot. This diet for jaundice recovery focuses on clean boiled water, small light meals like khichdi and dal soup, fresh fruits and vegetables, and strictly no alcohol — as support for the treatment and tests your doctor advises, never as a replacement.

Illustrated still life with ice, lemon.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

Diet for jaundice recovery: why the liver needs rest

Jaundice is yellowing of the eyes and skin caused by a build-up of bilirubin. In India it is most often due to viral hepatitis A or E from contaminated water, but gallstones, alcohol, medicines and other liver diseases can also cause it. The cause must be found by a doctor, and some cases need hospital care.

Ayurveda calls it kamala, a pitta disorder of the liver and blood, and traditionally recommends light, cooling, low-fat food, sugarcane juice and radish leaf juice in some texts. Many old food restrictions (like avoiding all turmeric or yellow food) have no basis; what matters is easy digestion, hygiene and adequate calories.

Ingredients

  • Boiled and cooled drinking water
  • Moong dal khichdi, rice with thin dal, vegetable soups
  • Fresh fruits such as papaya, apple, pomegranate and sweet lime
  • Steamed vegetables like bottle gourd, pumpkin and radish with leaves

How to prepare

  1. Cook meals fresh at home with minimal oil and mild spices.
  2. Wash and peel fruits yourself; avoid cut fruit from outside.

How to use

  • Eat 5–6 small meals a day so you get enough energy without overloading digestion.
  • Drink plenty of boiled water, coconut water and fresh homemade juices (hygienically prepared).
  • Rest well until your doctor says your liver tests are improving.

Helpful habits

  • Avoid alcohol completely for as long as your doctor advises — usually several months.
  • Skip fried food, street food, red meat and very spicy dishes during recovery.
  • Wash hands before eating and after using the toilet to avoid spreading hepatitis A or E.

Precautions

  • Continue prescribed treatment and don't take herbal liver tonics, painkillers or any new medicine (including paracetamol) without your doctor's approval.
  • Pregnant women with jaundice need urgent medical care — hepatitis E can be serious in pregnancy. Children with jaundice should be seen by a paediatrician; newborn jaundice is managed differently.
  • Go to hospital for confusion, drowsiness, vomiting blood, black stools, swelling of the belly, very dark urine with little output, or worsening yellowness.

How long does jaundice take to recover?

Viral hepatitis usually improves in a few weeks, but full liver recovery may take longer. Follow your doctor's tests.
