One or two garlic cloves tempered in ghee and stirred into dal

One or two garlic cloves tempered in ghee with cumin and stirred into everyday dal is a kitchen habit. Not raw garlic on an empty stomach. It is supportive and not a substitute for a doctor.

Two garlic cloves, cumin seeds and a small bowl of ghee on a wooden board

Garlic in the tadka, not on an empty stomach

A clove or two of garlic, sliced and warmed in a little ghee with cumin, tastes milder than a raw clove chewed alone. Stirred into hot dal, it is part of lunch or dinner.

Not raw garlic on an empty stomach. The dal is supportive food and not a substitute for a doctor.

Ingredients

  • 1 or 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ghee
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • A bowl of cooked dal

How to prepare

  1. Peel and slice the garlic. Keep it to one or two cloves.
  2. Warm the ghee, add the cumin and garlic, and cook until the garlic smells sweet, not burnt.

How to use

  • Pour the tadka over hot dal and stir.
  • Eat it with rice or roti as a normal meal.
  • Do not chew raw garlic on an empty stomach in place of this tadka.

Helpful habits

  • Take the pan off the heat before the garlic turns dark. Burnt garlic tastes bitter.
  • One clove is enough in a small bowl of dal. A whole bulb is a different, harsher dish.

Precautions

  • Not raw garlic on an empty stomach.
  • Skip or use less if garlic gives you burning, and ask a doctor if you have been told to limit it.
  • This is supportive only and not a substitute for a doctor.
