Everyday dal finished with one garlic clove

A familiar bowl of moong dal can be finished with one garlic clove tempered in a few drops of oil and a pinch of cumin. It is lunch, not a tablet. This does not replace blood-pressure medicine.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

Garlic as tadka, not a tablet

Indian kitchens already bloom garlic in hot oil for a few seconds so the clove turns fragrant and soft. One clove stirred into a bowl of moong dal is a normal savoury finish.

Do not eat raw garlic by the handful on an empty stomach for this habit. This page does not promise any change in blood pressure. This does not replace blood-pressure medicine.

Ingredients

  • One garlic clove
  • A bowl of cooked moong dal
  • A pinch of cumin
  • A few drops of oil

How to prepare

  1. Cook moong dal the way you usually do, with little salt.
  2. Warm a few drops of oil, add cumin and one crushed garlic clove, and take it off the heat as soon as it smells sweet, not burnt.

How to use

  • Stir the tempering into one bowl of dal.
  • Eat it with a meal, not as a raw clove on an empty stomach.
  • Continue blood-pressure medicine as prescribed.

Helpful habits

  • One clove is the habit. A whole bulb is a different, harsher plate.
  • If garlic repeats or burns the stomach, skip the tadka.

Precautions

  • This is everyday food, not a reason to change a dose. This does not replace blood-pressure medicine.
  • People who bleed easily or are heading for surgery should ask a doctor before eating much more garlic than usual. This does not replace blood-pressure medicine.
  • Burnt garlic is bitter. Discard a bitter tempering rather than forcing it down. This does not replace blood-pressure medicine.
