Healthy weight gain: banana-date milk, ghee and regular meals

Being underweight can mean low energy, frequent illness and weak muscles. Ayurveda's approach is to build strong digestion first, then nourish with wholesome, calorie-rich foods like milk, ghee, dates, bananas and nuts — not junk food.

Illustrated still life with banana, dates, cardamom.

The Ayurvedic view

In Ayurveda, a thin frame that struggles to gain weight usually reflects high vata: irregular appetite, quick metabolism, a restless mind and light sleep. The goal is brimhana — nourishing therapy — with warm, moist, naturally sweet and grounding foods, regular meals, good sleep and strength-building exercise. Digestion matters: eating more is only useful if the body can digest it.

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe banana
  • 2 soft dates, seeds removed
  • 1 cup milk (or a fortified plant milk)
  • 1 teaspoon ghee, 4–5 soaked almonds and a pinch of cardamom

How to prepare

  1. Blend the banana, dates, soaked almonds and milk until smooth. Warm slightly in winter.
  2. Stir in the ghee and cardamom.

How to use

  • Drink as a mid-morning or evening snack, 4–5 days a week.
  • Eat three proper meals plus two snacks daily; add a teaspoon of ghee to dal or roti.
  • Include paneer, curd, dal, rajma, chana, eggs or fish if you eat them, peanuts and seeds.

Helpful habits

  • Do strength exercises 3 times a week so the weight gained is muscle, not just fat.
  • Eat in a calm setting and don't skip breakfast.
  • Sleep early — rest supports nourishment.

Precautions

  • People with diabetes, high cholesterol or lactose intolerance should adjust the recipe with their doctor or dietitian (for example fewer dates, no ghee, plant milk).
  • Unexplained weight loss, poor appetite, frequent loose stools, excessive thirst, fever or night sweats need a medical check-up — thyroid problems, diabetes, infections and gut conditions can all cause it.
  • Avoid ‘weight gainer’ powders or pills of unknown composition, especially those that promise fast results.
