Home remedies for dark lips: beetroot–ghee balm, gentle exfoliation and SPF
Lips can darken from sun, smoking, dehydration, licking them constantly or reactions to lipstick. These home remedies for dark lips — a nourishing beetroot–ghee balm, a gentle sugar–honey scrub once a week and a lip balm with SPF — soften the lips and help them look healthier and more even.

Home remedies for dark lips: common causes
Lip skin is very thin and has no oil glands or much protective pigment, so it dries and darkens easily. Sun exposure, smoking, caffeine, dehydration, lip-licking, long-lasting matte lipsticks and allergies to toothpaste or lip products are frequent causes. Some people naturally have darker lips, which is normal and healthy.
Ayurveda sees dry, dark, cracked lips as vata and pitta imbalance and uses ghee (and nabhi oiling — applying a drop of ghee or oil in the navel at night) as a traditional remedy.

- Apply the beetroot–ghee balm every night before bed.
- Use a lip balm with SPF during the day and reapply after eating.
Helpful habits
- Drink enough water and stop licking or biting your lips.
- Remove lipstick fully at night; take breaks from long-wear matte formulas.
- Quitting smoking gradually improves lip colour.
Precautions
- Stop any product that causes itching, swelling or peeling — lip allergies are common.
- Don't use lemon, bleach or toothpaste on the lips.
- See a doctor for a dark spot that grows, bleeds or changes shape, patchy dark spots with other symptoms, or cracked lips that don't heal — these need evaluation. Children's lip darkening with other skin spots should be checked by a paediatrician.
Frequently asked questions
Can dark lips become pink naturally?
- If darkening is due to sun, dryness or smoking, lips often lighten with care. Naturally darker lips are normal and won't change colour.
Is beetroot good for dark lips?
- Beetroot adds a natural tint and, mixed with ghee, moisturises. It's a pleasant, gentle remedy rather than a lightening treatment.
How often should I scrub my lips?
- Once a week is enough. Scrubbing more often can irritate delicate lip skin.
