Home remedies for pigmentation on face: sun care first, then gentle masks

Brown patches on the cheeks, forehead or upper lip are very common in Indian skin. These home remedies for pigmentation on face start with the most effective step — strict sun protection — and add gentle potato–aloe and mulethi–curd masks that may help the skin look more even over time.

Home remedies for pigmentation on face: understanding the causes

Facial pigmentation includes sun spots, marks after pimples or rashes, and melasma — symmetrical patches triggered by sun, heat and hormones (pregnancy, contraceptive pills). Melasma is stubborn and tends to return with sun exposure, so protection matters more than any pack.

Ayurveda calls dark facial patches vyanga and links them with pitta disturbance, stress, heat and anger. Cooling herbs such as sandalwood, licorice (yashtimadhu) and manjistha have long been used in face packs, and licorice extract is also studied in modern skin care for its brightening effect.

Ingredients

  • 1 small raw potato, grated and squeezed for juice
  • 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel
  • ½ teaspoon mulethi (licorice) powder and 1 tablespoon curd
  • Sunscreen SPF 30+ (a tinted one with iron oxides helps with melasma), and a cap or umbrella

How to prepare

  1. Mix 1 tablespoon potato juice with the aloe gel.
  2. Separately mix mulethi powder with curd into a smooth paste.

How to use

  • Dab the potato–aloe mix on patches with cotton, leave for 15 minutes and rinse; four or five times a week.
  • Apply the mulethi–curd mask for 15 minutes twice a week.
  • Wear sunscreen every morning and reapply every 2–3 hours outdoors; avoid peak sun between 11 am and 3 pm.

Helpful habits

  • Heat also triggers melasma — avoid facial steaming and cooking close to a hot stove without a break.
  • Sleep well and manage stress; include colourful fruits and vegetables daily.

Precautions

  • Patch test each mask. Stop if the skin stings, reddens or peels.
  • Avoid lemon, bleach creams and unprescribed steroid or 'fairness' creams — they can cause thinning, rashes and worse pigmentation.
  • See a dermatologist for rapidly spreading patches, a changing mole, or pigmentation with other symptoms. During pregnancy, focus on sun care and check before using active ingredients.

Frequently asked questions

Can pigmentation on the face be removed naturally?

Sun spots and post-acne marks often fade with sun protection and gentle care. Melasma can be lightened but tends to return, so ongoing sun care is essential.

Is potato juice good for pigmentation?

Potato juice is a traditional home brightener that may help mild pigmentation. It's gentle but results are slow and modest.

Which sunscreen is best for pigmentation?

A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, used daily. Tinted sunscreens with iron oxides also block visible light, which helps melasma.
