Home remedies for diaper rash: nappy-free time, gentle cleaning and a coconut oil barrier
Red, sore skin under the nappy makes babies cry at every change. These home remedies for diaper rash keep the area clean, dry and protected: frequent changes, plain water or cotton cleaning, nappy-free time and a thin barrier of virgin coconut oil or a zinc cream.

Why diaper rash happens
Diaper rash is usually caused by skin staying in contact with urine and stool, rubbing, tight nappies, new wipes or soaps, and loose motions. A bright red rash with small spots at the edges, in the skin folds, may be a yeast infection that needs an antifungal cream.
In Indian homes, virgin coconut oil has long been used on babies' skin for its gentle, soothing quality.
Ingredients
- Lukewarm water and soft cotton or a muslin cloth
- Virgin coconut oil or a zinc oxide barrier cream
- Breathable cotton nappies or a size-up disposable nappy
How to prepare
- Keep a bowl of lukewarm water and cotton ready at the changing spot.
- Warm a little coconut oil between your fingers.
How to use
- Change the nappy as soon as it is wet or soiled, and at least every 2–3 hours.
- Clean with water and cotton, pat dry (do not rub) and leave the nappy off for 10–15 minutes several times a day.
- Apply a thin layer of coconut oil or zinc cream before putting on a fresh nappy.
Helpful habits
- Avoid scented wipes, powders and soaps on the rash.
- Fasten nappies loosely so air can circulate.
- Wash cloth nappies with mild detergent and rinse well.
Precautions
- Avoid talcum powder, which can be inhaled by babies, and do not use turmeric, besan or home pastes on broken skin.
- See a doctor if the rash has blisters, pus, open sores or bright red spots in skin folds, spreads beyond the nappy area, comes with fever, or does not improve in 3 days.
- Stop coconut oil if the skin looks more irritated.
