Home remedies for gastritis: cold milk or coconut water, small meals and a gentle diet

Gastritis is inflammation of the stomach lining that causes burning, gnawing pain or fullness in the upper belly. These home remedies for gastritis support treatment by keeping the stomach calm: small, bland meals, coconut water, curd rice, fennel water and cutting back on spicy food, alcohol and painkillers.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

About gastritis

Gastritis can be caused by H. pylori infection, regular use of painkillers like ibuprofen or aspirin, alcohol, smoking, stress and very spicy or irregular meals. It can be short-lived or long-lasting. Untreated, it can sometimes lead to ulcers or bleeding, so persistent symptoms need medical care.

In Ayurveda, the burning quality of gastritis is linked with excess pitta, and cooling foods like coconut water, fennel and rice are traditionally preferred.

Ingredients

  • Tender coconut water
  • 1 teaspoon fennel (saunf) seeds
  • Curd rice, khichdi or soft idli for meals

How to prepare

  1. Soak fennel in a glass of water for 1–2 hours, or overnight, and strain.
  2. Cook meals soft with minimal oil and chilli.

How to use

  • Eat small meals every 3–4 hours rather than 2 large ones.
  • Sip coconut water or fennel water between meals.
  • Finish dinner at least 3 hours before bed.

Helpful habits

  • Limit chilli, pickles, fried food, tea, coffee, alcohol and smoking.
  • Don't skip meals or stay hungry for long hours.
  • Ask your doctor before taking painkillers.

Precautions

  • Seek urgent care for black stools, vomiting blood or coffee-ground material, severe pain or fainting.
  • See a doctor if symptoms last more than a week, return often, or come with weight loss or difficulty swallowing; tests for H. pylori may be needed.
  • Home remedies do not replace prescribed treatment.
