Home remedies for smelly gas: hing, ajwain, slow eating and smarter food choices

Passing gas is normal — most people do it 10–20 times a day — but a strong smell can be embarrassing. These home remedies for smelly gas — adding hing and ajwain to meals, eating slowly, soaking dals properly and noticing which foods trigger odour — help reduce both the amount and the smell.

Home remedies for smelly gas: what makes it smell

Most intestinal gas is odourless. The smell comes from small amounts of sulphur compounds made when gut bacteria break down certain foods — eggs, meat, onion, garlic, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and some dals — or when digestion of milk or wheat is incomplete. Constipation lets gas build up and smell stronger.

Ayurveda links foul-smelling gas with ama (poorly digested food) and weak agni, and uses hing, ajwain, ginger and a light diet to clear it.

Ingredients

  • A pinch of hing (asafoetida) for cooking
  • ½ teaspoon ajwain boiled in a cup of water
  • Fresh buttermilk or homemade curd
  • Dals soaked for 6–8 hours before cooking

How to prepare

  1. Boil ajwain in water for 3–4 minutes, strain and cool to warm.
  2. Soak dals and beans, discard the soaking water and cook well with hing and ginger.

How to use

  • Drink warm ajwain water once or twice a day after meals when gassy.
  • Temper dals and vegetables with hing, jeera and ginger.
  • Eat slowly with the mouth closed; avoid talking while chewing, chewing gum and fizzy drinks (they add swallowed air).
  • Keep a 1–2 week food diary to find your personal triggers.

Helpful habits

  • Treat constipation with water, fibre and activity.
  • If milk makes it worse, try curd or buttermilk instead.
  • A short walk after meals helps gas move along.

Precautions

  • Hing and ajwain are warming; use small amounts if you have acidity or ulcers.
  • Pregnant women can use hing and ajwain in cooking amounts; children only small pinches in food — check with a doctor for anything more.
  • Some medicines (iron, antibiotics, diabetes drugs such as metformin) can change gas; ask your doctor rather than stopping them.
  • See a doctor for gas with weight loss, blood in stool, persistent diarrhoea, severe pain or a change in bowel habits.
