Screen eye strain: the 20-20-20 rule, palming and a cool rose-water compress

Long hours on laptops and phones leave eyes dry, tired and burning, often with a headache. Regular breaks, blinking, palming and a cool compress with rose water on closed lids bring quick relief.

The Ayurvedic view

In Ayurvedic terms, staring at bright screens for hours aggravates pitta in the eyes (burning, redness) and vata (dryness, fatigue). Traditional eye care focused on rest, cooling applications on the closed eyelids and eye exercises. Modern research confirms that we blink far less while looking at screens, which dries the eye surface — so simple breaks and blinking really help.

Ingredients

  • Pure rose water (without added perfume or alcohol) or plain chilled water
  • Two cotton pads

How to prepare

  1. Chill the rose water in the fridge for a little while. Soak the cotton pads and squeeze out the excess.

How to use

  • Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds, and blink fully several times.
  • Palming: rub your palms until warm and cup them gently over closed eyes for a minute, breathing slowly.
  • At the end of the workday, lie down with the cool pads on closed eyelids for 10 minutes.

Helpful habits

  • Keep the screen an arm's length away and slightly below eye level; reduce glare and match brightness to the room.
  • Increase font size rather than leaning forward.
  • Stop using the phone at least 30 minutes before sleep.
  • Drink enough water; sit away from AC vents blowing on your face.

Precautions

  • Rose water is used only on closed eyelids here — don't pour it into the eyes.
  • Stop if the eyelids itch, swell or redden.
  • Frequent headaches or blurring may mean you need glasses or a new prescription — get your eyes tested. See a doctor for eye pain, discharge or reduced vision.
