Thin yellow moong peya with cumin, ginger and a drop of ghee
When the stomach feels tired and a normal meal sounds like too much, a thin yellow moong peya is easier than a dry plate of dal. Cumin, ginger and a drop of ghee keep it savoury and soft.

A thin gruel when meals feel heavy
Peya is simply a thin rice or dal gruel, cooked longer and looser than everyday dal. Yellow moong is the dal many homes choose when the stomach wants something plain. Cumin and ginger give it a familiar smell, and a drop of ghee keeps the spoon from tasting watery.
Ayurveda often reaches for light, warm food when agni feels tired, rather than a feast that asks the belly to work harder. This bowl may soothe that tiredness. It is not a substitute for a doctor if you cannot keep food down, or if weakness and loose stools continue.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons yellow moong dal
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin
- A small piece of ginger
- A few drops of ghee
- Water to keep the gruel thin
How to prepare
- Rinse the moong dal and simmer it in plenty of water with cumin and crushed ginger until the grains fall apart.
- Mash it smooth and thin it until it pours like a light gruel. Finish with a few drops of ghee.
How to use
- Eat a small bowl warm, as a meal or as the soft part of a meal.
- Salt it lightly. Keep chilli out while the stomach feels tired.
- Have it freshly cooked. Do not reheat a thick, dried-out pot.
Helpful habits
- The gruel should coat a spoon and still pour. If it stands up like halwa, add hot water.
- A drop of ghee is enough. A large spoon turns a light peya heavy.
Precautions
- If even liquids are being brought back up, stop home food experiments and see a doctor.
- Use plain yellow moong, not a spicy restaurant dal fry.
- This is supportive food for a tired stomach, not a substitute for a doctor.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add rice?
- A spoon of rice can cook in the same pot if you want a khichdi-like gruel. Keep it thin, with the same cumin, ginger and drop of ghee.
Is packaged moong dal flour all right?
- Whole or split yellow moong dal, well cooked, is the idea. A fine flour paste is a different texture and easy to make gluey.
How thin is thin?
- It should drink from a spoon almost like a soup, not sit like a dry dal.
