Barley water and plenty of fluids for urinary comfort

Burning while passing urine is common in hot weather and when you don't drink enough. Homemade barley water (jau ka pani), coconut water and good hygiene habits are soothing supports — but a urine infection needs proper testing and treatment.

The Ayurvedic view

Ayurveda calls painful, burning urination mutrakricchra and often links it with pitta heat and dehydration. Barley (yava) is described as cooling and diuretic, and barley water has long been a summer drink in Indian homes. Plenty of fluids help flush the urinary tract. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are especially common in women and should be diagnosed with a urine test.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons pearl barley (jau), washed
  • 4 cups water
  • Juice of ½ lemon; a little mishri (optional)

How to prepare

  1. Soak barley for an hour, then simmer in the water for 25–30 minutes until soft.
  2. Strain, cool and add lemon juice (and mishri if you like). Refrigerate and use within a day.

How to use

  • Drink 1–2 glasses of barley water through the day, along with plain water and coconut water.
  • Aim for pale-yellow urine as a sign of good hydration.

Helpful habits

  • Don't hold urine for long; empty the bladder fully.
  • Wipe front to back, urinate after intercourse, and wear cotton underwear.
  • Avoid very spicy food, excess tea and coffee and alcohol when you have burning.

Precautions

  • Barley contains gluten — avoid if you have coeliac disease. People with diabetes should skip mishri.
  • People with kidney or heart disease on fluid restriction should check with their doctor before increasing fluids.
  • See a doctor for burning that lasts more than a day or two, fever, back or side pain, blood in urine, vomiting, or any urinary symptoms in pregnancy, men, children, or people with diabetes — these may need antibiotics.
