Daily habits that support healthy blood sugar
India has one of the largest numbers of people living with diabetes and prediabetes. Medicines matter — and so do everyday habits: a post-meal walk, fibre-first plates, fewer refined carbs and sweets, good sleep and regular check-ups.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.
The Ayurvedic view
Ayurveda describes prameha, a group of conditions with excessive urination, and madhumeha (‘honey urine’) closely resembles diabetes. It links them with heavy, sweet, oily food, oversleeping and lack of exercise, and recommends bitter and astringent foods, physical activity and a disciplined routine. These ideas align well with modern lifestyle advice — as a support to medical treatment, never as a replacement.
Ingredients
- A balanced plate: half non-starchy vegetables, a quarter dal/paneer/eggs/fish, a quarter whole grains (millets, brown rice, whole wheat)
- Bitter vegetables in rotation: karela, methi leaves, bottle gourd, ridge gourd
- A pair of comfortable walking shoes
How to prepare
- Plan meals at consistent times; don't skip breakfast.
- Keep portions of rice, roti and potatoes moderate, and eat vegetables and protein first.
How to use
- Walk for 10–15 minutes after each main meal, and aim for at least 150 minutes of brisk activity a week.
- Replace sugary tea, soft drinks, juices and sweets with water, buttermilk, unsweetened tea or whole fruit in moderate portions.
- Check blood sugar as advised by your doctor and keep a log to share at visits.
Helpful habits
- Sleep 7–8 hours; poor sleep raises sugar levels.
- Manage stress with breathing practices, yoga or walks.
- Get feet, eyes, kidneys and teeth checked yearly.
Precautions
- Keep taking your diabetes medicines or insulin exactly as prescribed. Don't stop or reduce them because you've started a home remedy.
- Methi, karela, jamun and cinnamon can lower sugar and add to medicine effects — tell your doctor before using them regularly, and watch for low sugar (shaking, sweating, confusion).
- Be wary of any product claiming to ‘cure diabetes’.
