Ginger–lemon appetiser before meals
A tiny bite of fresh ginger with lemon and rock salt, taken before lunch, is a classic way to wake up a sluggish appetite and support agni (digestive fire).

Ingredients
- A thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger
- A few drops of lemon juice
- A pinch of rock salt (sendha namak)
How to prepare
- Peel the ginger and cut it into thin slices or fine matchsticks.
- Sprinkle the lemon juice and rock salt over the slices and mix.
- Keep in a small glass jar in the fridge for up to 2–3 days.
How to use
- Chew 1–2 thin slices slowly about 10–15 minutes before your main meal.
- Best before lunch, when digestion is naturally strongest.
Precautions
- Skip it if you have acidity, heartburn, mouth ulcers or a stomach ulcer — ginger is heating.
- Talk to your doctor first if you take blood-thinning medicine or have gallstones.
- If loss of appetite lasts more than a week or comes with weight loss, see a doctor.
