Home remedies for morning stiffness: stretch in bed, a warm shower and ginger-turmeric tea

Waking up stiff and slow to move is common, especially with age or in cold weather. These home remedies for morning stiffness help your body warm up: gentle stretches in bed, a warm shower, a short oil massage and a cup of ginger-turmeric tea.

Why we feel stiff in the morning

Joints and muscles stiffen during hours of stillness. A cold room, an unsupportive mattress, dehydration and osteoarthritis add to it. Stiffness that lasts more than 30–60 minutes, with swollen joints, can point to inflammatory arthritis and needs medical care.

Ayurveda links morning stiffness with vata and ama, recommending warmth, oil massage and warm, light food.

Ingredients

  • Fresh ginger and turmeric (or half a teaspoon turmeric powder)
  • 1 tablespoon warm sesame oil
  • A warm shower or warm towel

How to prepare

  1. Simmer ginger and turmeric slices in 2 cups of water for 5 minutes; strain.
  2. Keep the oil in a small bottle near your bed or bathroom.

How to use

  • Before getting up, stretch in bed: pull knees to chest, rotate ankles and wrists, and gently turn the neck — 5 minutes.
  • Take a warm shower, letting water run over stiff areas; massage warm oil on knees, hands and shoulders before bathing.
  • Sip ginger-turmeric tea with breakfast.

Helpful habits

  • Keep the bedroom warm and use a supportive mattress and pillow.
  • Drink a glass of warm water after waking.
  • Stay active during the day with walks and gentle yoga.

Precautions

  • Turmeric in large doses may not suit people on blood thinners or with gallstones.
  • Avoid very hot showers if you have low BP or feel dizzy.
  • See a doctor if stiffness lasts more than 30–60 minutes daily, joints are swollen or warm, or there's fatigue or fever.
