Home remedies for wrist pain: strain, tendons and carpal tunnel

Wrist pain often comes from repetitive strain of tendons (tendinitis, including De Quervain's at the thumb side), arthritis, old injuries or carpal tunnel syndrome — pressure on the median nerve that causes tingling and numbness in the thumb and first fingers, often at night. New mothers frequently get wrist pain from lifting babies.

Ayurveda would treat most wrist pain as vata in the joints and tendons (snayu), using warm oil, fomentation and rest.

Ingredients

  • A bowl of warm water
  • Warm sesame oil for massage
  • A soft wrist brace or splint (for night use)

How to prepare

  1. Fill a bowl with comfortably warm water.

How to use

  • Soak the wrist in warm water for 10 minutes while slowly opening and closing the fist.
  • Do wrist flexor and extensor stretches: arm straight, gently bend the hand down and up with the other hand, holding 15–20 seconds, 3 times each.
  • Massage the forearm and wrist with warm oil for 5 minutes.
  • Take a 1–2 minute break every 30 minutes of typing or phone use.

Helpful habits

  • Keep wrists straight while typing; use a wrist rest and keep the keyboard at elbow height.
  • Hold your phone with both hands and use voice typing sometimes.
  • Wear a splint that keeps the wrist straight at night if you have tingling.

Precautions

  • Use ice instead of heat if the wrist is swollen after an injury.
  • Pregnant women often develop carpal tunnel symptoms; night splints are safe but check with your doctor for persistent numbness. Wrist pain after a fall in children needs an X-ray.
  • Ask before painkillers or painkiller gels if you take blood thinners or have kidney problems.
  • See a doctor for weakness or dropping objects, constant numbness, muscle wasting at the base of the thumb, a deformed or very swollen wrist, or pain after a fall.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fastest way to relieve wrist pain?

Rest from the aggravating activity, warm soaks with gentle movement and stretches often give quick relief.

How do I know if it's carpal tunnel?

Tingling or numbness in the thumb, index and middle fingers, especially at night, suggests carpal tunnel. A doctor can confirm.

Should I wear a wrist brace?

A brace at night can help carpal tunnel symptoms. Don't wear one all day for long periods unless advised.
