Home remedies for sprain: rest, ice, compression, elevation — then turmeric and gentle movement

A twisted ankle on uneven steps or a wrist jarred during a fall can swell up fast. These home remedies for sprain start with the RICE method — rest, ice, compression and elevation — for the first two days, followed by a traditional warm turmeric paste and gentle movement to help the ligament heal.

Home remedies for sprain: the first 48 hours matter

A sprain is a stretch or tear of a ligament, the tough band that holds bones together at a joint. Ankles and wrists are most often affected. Mild sprains heal in 1–3 weeks; more severe ones take longer. Swelling and bruising are normal, but being unable to put any weight on the limb may mean a fracture.

In Indian homes, a warm paste of turmeric and lime (chuna) or turmeric with mustard oil is a traditional application for moch; turmeric is also valued in Ayurveda for injuries.

Ingredients

  • Ice or frozen peas wrapped in a thin towel
  • An elastic crepe bandage
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric mixed with a little warm mustard oil or water (from day 3)
  • Pillows for elevation

How to prepare

  1. Mix turmeric into a thick paste just before use; warm gently.

How to use

  • Days 1–2: rest the joint; ice for 15–20 minutes every 2–3 hours while awake.
  • Wrap with a crepe bandage — snug, not tight — and keep the limb raised above heart level.
  • From day 3, when swelling settles, apply the warm turmeric paste for 20–30 minutes once a day and rinse.
  • Start gentle movements like ankle circles as pain allows, then gradually return to walking.

Helpful habits

  • Wear supportive shoes and watch steps in poor light.
  • Do balance exercises (standing on one foot) after healing to prevent repeat sprains.
  • Avoid massaging the joint hard in the first few days.

Precautions

  • Don't put ice directly on skin; don't apply heat or turmeric paste to a freshly swollen joint in the first 48 hours.
  • Children with injuries should be checked by a doctor — growth plates can be injured. Pregnant women should avoid painkiller gels unless advised.
  • Ask before painkillers if you take blood thinners or have kidney problems or ulcers.
  • See a doctor if you can't bear weight, the joint looks deformed, there is numbness, severe pain, or no improvement in 5–7 days.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use ice or heat for a sprain?

Ice in the first 48 hours to limit swelling; gentle warmth after that can help stiffness.

Is turmeric paste good for a sprain?

Turmeric paste is a traditional Indian remedy for moch, best used after the first two days when swelling settles.

How do I know if it's a sprain or a fracture?

Severe pain, deformity, and being unable to put weight on it suggest a fracture. An X-ray may be needed.
