Ayurvedic remedies for rheumatoid arthritis: diet, gentle movement and warmth as support

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) causes painful, swollen joints — often the small joints of the hands and feet — with morning stiffness that lasts over an hour. These Ayurvedic remedies for rheumatoid arthritis — a light, warm, easy-to-digest diet, ginger and turmeric in cooking, gentle daily movement and dry warmth — may ease discomfort as support for the medicines your rheumatologist prescribes.

Illustrated still life with fresh ginger, ice, rock salt, cumin seeds, turmeric root.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

Ayurvedic remedies for rheumatoid arthritis: amavata explained

RA is an autoimmune disease: the immune system attacks the joint lining, causing inflammation that can damage joints if not treated early. Modern medicines (DMARDs) can slow or stop this damage, so early diagnosis and consistent treatment matter greatly.

Ayurveda describes a similar condition as amavata — ama (toxins from weak digestion) combined with vata lodging in the joints. Traditional care emphasises improving digestion, light warm food, dry fomentation with sand or rock-salt potli (valuka sweda), and avoiding heavy, cold and oily food. Unlike osteoarthritis, oil massage is traditionally avoided during active swelling.

Ingredients

  • Fresh ginger and turmeric for cooking
  • Light meals: moong dal, rice, millets, cooked vegetables
  • A cotton pouch of dry-roasted rock salt for dry warmth
  • Warm water with a few cumin seeds

How to prepare

  1. Roast a cup of rock salt in a pan until warm and tie it in a cotton cloth; check the temperature on your wrist.

How to use

  • Sip warm cumin water through the day and avoid iced drinks.
  • Include ginger and turmeric in daily cooking.
  • Press the warm salt potli gently on stiff joints for 5–10 minutes (not on hot, very swollen joints).
  • Do gentle range-of-motion exercises or chair yoga daily, as guided by a physiotherapist.

Helpful habits

  • Eat dinner early and light; limit fried food, sweets, red meat and heavy dairy at night.
  • Quit smoking — it worsens RA.
  • Balance activity with rest during flares.

Precautions

  • Continue prescribed treatment: never stop DMARDs, steroids or biologics without your rheumatologist, and tell them about any herbs you take.
  • Many RA medicines need special planning before and during pregnancy — talk to your doctor. Children with joint swelling need a paediatric rheumatologist.
  • Avoid unlabelled 'arthritis churnas' or bhasmas, which may contain steroids or heavy metals.
  • See your doctor promptly for fever, a new very hot joint, breathlessness, eye pain or redness, or side effects from medicines.
