Benefits of honey (shahad): cough relief, wound care and how to use it the Ayurvedic way

Honey has been prized in India for thousands of years, both as food and as anupana (a carrier) for herbs. The benefits of honey include soothing cough and sore throat, supporting healing of minor burns and wounds, and offering antioxidants as a gentler swap for refined sugar — as long as it is pure and used in moderation.

Benefits of honey: what makes it special

Honey contains natural sugars, enzymes, small amounts of antioxidants and compounds that give it antibacterial activity. Studies show a teaspoon of honey can ease night-time cough in children over 1 year about as well as some cough syrups. Medical-grade honey is used in wound dressings.

Ayurveda calls honey madhu and considers it sweet, astringent and kapha-reducing. It traditionally advises never heating honey strongly or cooking with it, and not mixing it with equal amounts of ghee — useful rules that also help preserve its delicate compounds.

Ingredients

  • Pure raw or minimally processed honey
  • Warm water, lemon, ginger or tulsi as needed

How to prepare

  1. Let water or tea cool to warm (drinkable) before stirring in honey.

How to use

  • Cough: 1 teaspoon honey at bedtime, alone or with ginger juice (adults and children over 1).
  • Sore throat: honey and lemon in warm water, 2–3 times a day.
  • Minor burn or cut (after cooling and cleaning): a thin layer of clean honey, covered with a dressing.
  • Sweetener: use in place of sugar in curd, fruit or warm drinks — sparingly.

Helpful habits

  • Store in a glass jar at room temperature; crystallisation is natural.
  • Buy from trusted sources (look for FSSAI and purity certification).
  • 1–2 teaspoons a day is plenty for most people.

Precautions

  • Never give honey to babies under 1 year — risk of infant botulism.
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women can have pasteurised honey in normal food amounts.
  • Honey raises blood sugar — people with diabetes should count it as sugar and continue prescribed treatment.
  • See a doctor for deep, large or infected wounds and burns, or a cough lasting over 3 weeks.
