One small peanut and sesame chikki
Peanuts and sesame seeds set in a little jaggery make a chikki you eat as one small piece. It is an iron-rich snack. It is not a treatment for anaemia.

One piece of peanut and sesame chikki
Chikki is a crunchy jaggery sweet sold at stations and made at home in winter. This batch stays small: a handful of peanuts, a spoon of sesame, and just enough jaggery to hold them. You cut it and eat one piece, not the whole sheet.
The seeds and nuts are food that happens to contain iron. One piece is not a treatment for anaemia, and it will not correct a blood count. People with a peanut allergy must not eat it. A broken tooth, a very sticky bite, or jaggery you have been told to limit are reasons to skip the piece and eat a plainer snack.
Ingredients
- A small handful of peanuts
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
- A small piece of jaggery
How to prepare
- Dry-roast the peanuts and sesame until they smell nutty, rub the peanut skins off if you can, and crush the peanuts roughly.
- Melt the jaggery with a few drops of water until it is thick and sticky, mix in the nuts and seeds, spread thinly, cool, and break into small pieces.
How to use
- Eat one small piece as a snack.
- Do not eat the whole batch in one sitting.
- Drink a sip of water after, and still eat your regular meals.
Helpful habits
- If the jaggery hardens before you spread it, warm the pan gently for a few seconds only.
- Store the pieces in a closed tin. They turn soft if left open in humid weather.
Precautions
- This is a snack, not a treatment for anaemia.
- Do not eat it if you have a peanut or sesame allergy.
- One piece is enough. People told to limit jaggery, and anyone with dizziness or heavy bleeding, should see a doctor rather than eat more chikki.
