A burning or tingling feeling in the soles, often worse at night, is a common complaint. These home remedies for burning feet cool and soothe with a cool water soak, a gentle ghee or coconut oil foot massage (padabhyanga), breathable footwear and B12-rich foods — while checking for the underlying cause with your doctor.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

Why feet burn

Burning feet are often a sign of irritated nerves (neuropathy). Common causes include diabetes, vitamin B12 deficiency, thyroid problems, alcohol, kidney disease and fungal infection. Tight shoes and standing all day can make it worse.

In Ayurveda, burning feet (pada daha) is linked to pitta, and a cooling ghee foot massage with a bronze bowl (kansa) is a traditional bedtime remedy.

  • A basin of cool (not icy) water
  • 1 teaspoon ghee or coconut oil
  • Soft cotton socks

  2. Keep ghee or coconut oil at room temperature.

How to use

  • Soak feet in cool water for 10–15 minutes in the evening.
  • Dry well and massage the soles with ghee or coconut oil for 5 minutes at bedtime.
  • Wear loose cotton socks at night if comfortable.

Precautions

  • People with diabetes should check water temperature and look for cuts or blisters daily.
  • See a doctor to check sugar, B12, thyroid and kidney function, especially with numbness, weakness, wounds or pain spreading upward.
