Home remedies for fungal infection on skin: keep it dry, neem baths and when to use antifungals

Itchy red rings in the groin, waist, thighs or under the breasts are very common in India's heat and humidity. These home remedies for fungal infection on skin — keeping skin dry, neem-water baths and loose cotton clothing — support healing and prevent spread. Most infections, however, also need a proper antifungal treatment.

Home remedies for fungal infection on skin and why it keeps coming back

Ringworm (tinea or 'daad') is caused by fungi that thrive in warm, moist skin folds. It spreads through towels, clothes and close contact. In recent years, many infections in India have become stubborn and widespread, often because people used over-the-counter creams containing steroids, which suppress itching but make the fungus spread.

Ayurveda describes similar itchy, spreading, ring-like patches under kushtha (skin disorders) such as dadru, and uses bitter, drying herbs like neem, haridra (turmeric) and chakramarda externally. Hygiene and dryness are just as central.

Ingredients

  • A handful of neem leaves boiled in a bucket's worth of bath water (or 2 litres, then diluted)
  • Loose cotton clothes and underwear
  • An antifungal dusting powder or cream advised by a doctor or pharmacist

How to prepare

  1. Boil the neem leaves for 10 minutes, cool and add to your bath water.

How to use

  • Bathe daily with neem water, then dry skin folds completely — pat, then air-dry or use a cool hair dryer.
  • Apply the antifungal cream as directed and continue for at least 2 weeks after the rash has cleared.
  • Wash clothes, towels and bedsheets in hot water and dry them in the sun; don't share towels.

Helpful habits

  • Change out of sweaty clothes quickly; avoid tight jeans and synthetic innerwear.
  • Treat all affected family members together to stop re-infection.
  • Keep blood sugar controlled if you have diabetes — high sugar makes fungal infections more common.

Precautions

  • Never use creams containing steroids (e.g., clobetasol, betamethasone, or 'mixed' creams) on a fungal rash — they make ringworm spread and harder to treat.
  • Don't apply raw garlic, lemon or vinegar on raw skin; they can burn.
  • See a doctor if the rash is widespread, on the face or scalp, not improving in 2 weeks, keeps returning, or if you are pregnant, diabetic or treating a child — oral antifungals may be needed.

Frequently asked questions

Can fungal infection go away with home remedies alone?

Mild cases sometimes improve with strict dryness and hygiene, but most need an antifungal cream. Home care helps prevent recurrence.

Why does my ringworm keep coming back?

Stopping treatment too early, steroid creams, sharing towels, tight sweaty clothes and untreated family members are common reasons.

Is neem good for fungal infection?

Neem has traditional antifungal use and neem baths are soothing and cleansing, but they work best alongside proper treatment.
