Home remedies for restless legs: warm oil massage, stretches and iron-rich food

An uncomfortable crawling or pulling feeling in the legs that gets worse at rest and eases when you move can keep you awake for hours. These home remedies for restless legs calm the legs in the evening with warm oil massage, stretches and a foot soak, and look at iron and caffeine, two common factors.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

What restless legs syndrome is

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) causes an urge to move the legs, usually in the evening or at night. Low iron stores, pregnancy, kidney disease, some medicines and caffeine or alcohol can bring it on or make it worse. A doctor can test iron levels and advise treatment.

Ayurveda treats this restless, moving quality as a vata disturbance and traditionally uses warm sesame oil massage and a regular evening routine.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil (or mustard oil in winter)
  • A basin of warm water and a pinch of rock salt
  • Iron-rich foods: green leafy vegetables, dals, rajma, chana, dates, jaggery, eggs or meat if you eat them

How to prepare

  1. Warm the oil slightly.
  2. Fill a basin with comfortably warm water and dissolve the salt.

How to use

  • Soak the feet and calves in warm water for 10 minutes in the evening.
  • Massage warm oil into the calves and feet with long upward strokes for 5–10 minutes before bed.
  • Do gentle calf and hamstring stretches for 5 minutes, and include iron-rich food with a vitamin C source (lemon, amla) daily.

Helpful habits

  • Avoid tea, coffee, colas and alcohol in the evening.
  • Walk for 20–30 minutes in the day; very intense late workouts may worsen symptoms.
  • Keep a regular sleep schedule.

Precautions

  • See a doctor to check iron (ferritin), kidney function and medicines if symptoms are frequent or disturb sleep.
  • Do not take iron tablets without testing; too much iron can be harmful.
  • Pregnant women should mention restless legs to their doctor.
