Methi–sonth winter laddoos for stiff joints

Across North India, winter means methi laddoos — small, warming sweets made with fenugreek, dry ginger, whole wheat flour, ghee and jaggery. Families traditionally make them for elders with stiff joints and new mothers during recovery.

Illustrated still life with fenugreek seeds, fresh ginger, almonds, jaggery.

The Ayurvedic view

Fenugreek (methi) and dry ginger (sonth) are both warming and are used in Ayurveda to calm vata, which is thought to be behind the joint stiffness and aches that increase in cold weather. Ghee, wheat, gond (edible gum) and nuts make the laddoos nourishing. They're a seasonal food rather than a medicine, so small portions are the idea.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup methi seeds, soaked in ½ cup milk overnight and ground coarsely (or ¼ cup methi powder)
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour (atta)
  • ½ cup ghee
  • 1 tablespoon dry ginger powder (sonth), ½ teaspoon cardamom powder
  • ¾ cup grated jaggery; 2 tablespoons each chopped almonds and cashews

How to prepare

  1. Roast the methi paste in 1 tablespoon ghee on low heat for 8–10 minutes until dry and fragrant. Set aside.
  2. In the remaining ghee, roast the atta on low heat, stirring constantly, until golden and nutty (15–20 minutes).
  3. Add methi, sonth, cardamom and nuts; switch off the heat. When warm (not hot), mix in the jaggery.
  4. Shape into small laddoos about the size of a walnut. Store in an airtight jar for up to three weeks.

How to use

  • Eat one small laddoo in the morning with warm milk during winter months.

Helpful habits

  • Pair with a daily walk and joint-mobility exercises; movement is what keeps joints supple.
  • Warm oil massage on stiff joints complements this well.

Precautions

  • These laddoos are rich in sugar and fat — people with diabetes, high cholesterol or weight concerns should avoid them or ask their doctor or dietitian.
  • Methi can lower blood sugar and may interact with diabetes and blood-thinning medicines. Avoid during pregnancy unless a doctor advises.
  • Stop if they cause heartburn or loose stools.
