Benefits of saffron (kesar): mood, sleep, skin glow and how much to use
Just a few golden-red strands of kesar turn milk, kheer and biryani into something special. The benefits of saffron go beyond colour and aroma: research suggests it may support mood and sleep, while Ayurveda values it for skin glow, warmth in winter and women's wellbeing — all in tiny amounts.

Benefits of saffron: what research suggests
Saffron (Crocus sativus) contains crocin, crocetin and safranal. Several small clinical trials found 30 mg a day of saffron extract may help mild low mood and PMS symptoms, and some suggest better sleep quality. It is a powerful antioxidant. Because it takes thousands of flowers to make a small amount, saffron is expensive and often adulterated.
In Ayurveda, kumkuma is warming, improves complexion (varnya) and is used in kumkumadi oil for the face and in milk for vitality.

- Saffron may interact with BP, blood thinners and antidepressants — take supplements only with your doctor's approval and continue prescribed treatment.
- Very large doses (5 g or more) can be toxic. See a doctor if low mood lasts more than two weeks.
